Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB)
Context: Air India Flight AIC 171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, bound for London Gatwick crashed on June 12, 2025 in Ahmedabad.
★ AAIB in India is an independent investigative body under the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
★ AAIB investigates all aircraft accidents and serious incidents in Indian airspace.
★ AIIB ensures impartial and unbiased investigations into aircraft accidents and serious incidents in Indian airspace.
★ In accordance with the ‘Standards and Recommended Practices’ (SARPS) contained in Annex 13 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation and Government of India’s ‘State Safety Programme’ (SSP); Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India established Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on 30 July 2012.
★ Prior to its formation, these investigations were handled by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
