Eurasian Otter
★ In News: The Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra), known locally as “Wuddar” or “Vuder,” has been spotted in the Lidder River near Srigufwara in Bijbehara, South Kashmir.
★ This species was believed to be locally extinct in Kashmir for the past 25-30 years.
★ It is a semi-aquatic carnivorous mammal which is native to Eurasia and the Maghreb.
★It is primarily a nocturnal animal meaning they are most active during the night.
★ It is diurnal in Shetlands.
Reasons for Past Decline
★ The sharp decline in otter populations in Kashmir historically was attributed to: Water pollution, Habitat degradation and Poaching.
Ecological Importance
★ Otters are considered keystone species in river ecosystems.
★ Otters are highly sensitive to water quality and prey availability, so their presence suggests cleaner water and a healthier population of fish and other aquatic life.
Conservation Status
- IUCN: Near threatened.
- Wildlife Protection Act, 1972: Schedule II.
- CITES: Appendix I.
