In News: The Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra), known locally as “Wuddar” or “Vuder,” has been spotted in the Lidder River near Srigufwara in Bijbehara, South Kashmir.

★ This species was believed to be locally extinct in Kashmir for the past 25-30 years.

★ It is a semi-aquatic carnivorous mammal which is native to Eurasia and the Maghreb.

★It is primarily a nocturnal animal meaning they are most active during the night.

★ It is diurnal in Shetlands.

★ The sharp decline in otter populations in Kashmir historically was attributed to: Water pollution, Habitat degradation and Poaching.

Otters are considered keystone species in river ecosystems.

★ Otters are highly sensitive to water quality and prey availability, so their presence suggests cleaner water and a healthier population of fish and other aquatic life.
