In News: India has ranked 131 out of 148 countries in WEF's Global Gender Gap Report 2025.

This represents a slight slip of two places from its 2024 ranking of 129th out of 146 countries.

Iceland maintains its top position for the 16th straight year, ahead of Finland, Norway, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand.

India's overall gender parity score of 64.4% is among the lowest in South Asia. Parity means state or condition of being equal.

Iceland is the only economy to surpass 90% parity.

In South Asia, India lags behind several of its neighbors:

  • Bangladesh (24th)
  • Bhutan (119th)
  • Nepal (125th)
  • Sri Lanka (130th)

★ Global Gender Gap Report is released annually by the WEF.

★ The index lies between 0 and 1. A score of 1 (or 100%) would indicate that there is no gender gap in that particular area.

A score of 0 (or 0%) would signify complete inequality.

★ Index assesses countries based on four key dimensions:

  • Economic Participation and Opportunity
  • Educational Attainment
  • Health and Survival
  • Political Empowerment

★ India's political empowerment performance remains weak, falling by 0.6 points from 2024.

Globally, the gender gap has closed by 68.8%, but at the current pace, full parity is still 123 years away.
